What our guests say about the cottage
"Thank you very much for letting us use this very special cottage. We have holidayed in a few cottages & cabins over the years, but we have never felt so relaxed & refreshed as we have at West Carie. Sitting in the garden with the sun to the west with the quiet and stillness will be remembered for a long time, as will the beautiful scenery and walks. The walks on this holiday have been done at one pace (slow) but still crammed everything in, including Glen Lyon. The weather has been mixed but not enough as keep us in. Light waterproofs were all that was needed. As I write this I am thinking of the wonderful week we have had at West Carie Cottage and definitely this goes on to our short list of “return to”. Thank you very much again."
Agnes & David, Meg & Jess, Inverkeithing
"Cottage so peaceful & comfortable. Enjoyed the loch (boating), walking locally and seeing the wildlife which included a greater spotted wood pecker & large birds of prey. So many primroses and bluebells. A week was not enough."
Maggie & Don Smith, East Yorkshire
"The weekend was very relaxing for all of us. Bailey, the dog, was well walked and slept most of the time. The weather was nice even when it rained on the Sunday. Seen plenty of wildlife and a deer chased us in the car on the way home from the village. The yellow walk was worth going along, especially heading toward Glen Lyon."
The Parker Family, Kilmarnock
"Very cosy cottage & so well equipped. As the weather was excellent able to spend time enjoying the wonderful tranquil & scenic garden."
Rosie & Geoff Potts & Jessie the border collie, Bury St Edmunds
"Had a very relaxing week. Very tranquil up here. Kids have had a brilliant time playing in the garden on the trampoline & down on the loch. Went to Rannoch station for a drive – nice, desolate scenery. Had a nice day out at the ‘Adventure Safari’ near Aberfeldy. Kids have also enjoyed cooking sausages on the outside fire. We have had an excellent week, even though the sun hid for most of it, but not much rain."
The MacLean family, Cumbernauld
"Idyllic. Brilliant weather (better than the summer – no mutant midges!). Enjoyed the bonfire – sat outside every night looking at the 1000’s of stars, listening to the owls and watching the bats. Wildlife – saw buzzards, sparrow-hawk, trillions of woodpeckers, tree creeper, cross-bill, all the finches and visited by a curious red squirrel as we unpacked! Highlight on the walk to Bridge of Gaur was to see a Golden Eagle being mobbed by a Peregrine! Wow! Great time, kids loved it… and in the words of Arnie… 'we’ll be back'."
The Spencer Family, Birmingham
"A good time was had by all. Excellent cottage – very cosy and all home comforts. Thanks for the wine and shortbread, very much appreciated. The peace and quiet is most appreciated in a noise world and we hope to be back soon. Thanks for the use of your lovely home."
Jeff & Ann, Bolton
"What a perfect place to practice the 3 “R’s”: REST, READING, RAMBLING. It has been a great holiday and the scenery is absolutely beautiful. Lots of excellent walks were enjoyed andbest of all was Schiehallion, though it was covered in snow at the time. The Dunalistair Hotel do a lovely evening meal, but we would also recommend the Strath Garry in Pitlochry. The drive to Rannoch Station from the cottage is quite stunning."
Colin & Doreen Albin, Cheshire
"Snow, snow & more snow!! Lit fire and opened wonderful bottle of wine (welcome pack). Later on in the week the snow now thawed. Persuaded husband & children that we needed to get out and about, so visited Edradour distillery – highly recommended, and dined out at Dunalastair Hotel – Kinloch Rannoch – expensive, but wonderful menu. Had a lovely, relaxing stay, despite doubtful start with the heavy snow (thanks for loan of sledges!). Ended our time here with sunshine, clear skies and even some warmth in the sun! Thanks for everything."
The Newsome Family & Josh the dog, Stratford upon Avon
"We have had a lovely time at the cottage. Very peaceful and relaxing, and the lochside setting is excellent. The Rannoch area is exceptionally beautiful and we have enjoyed getting to know the area. Also good to arrive at accommodation which is clearly very well looked after!!"
Gary & Alison, Edinburgh
"Lots of rain every day but it did not dampen our spirits! Plenty of walks… from the cottage, up Schiehallion (in the snow!) and a day trip to Pitlochry where we walked to Edradour Distillery (Scotland’s smallest distillery) well worth a visit on a cold, wet day. Great to come back to the lovely, cosy cottage. We’ve had a wonderful time – thanks very much, thanks very, very much for the champagne, wine, chocolates, mince pies, party poppers and crackers. What a great place to spend New Year! Many thanks."
Rhona & Mark, Sam & Paul, Emma & Simon
"The weather has been unbelievably kind to us since we’ve been here – not one drop of rain has fallen from the sky – and on the first morning we awoke to clear blue skies and frosty temperatures – perfect for trying out the yellow walk behind the cottage. Your cottage has a lovely situation – a real “get away from it all” place – surrounded by stunning scenery and of course Loch Rannoch. We’ve found the accommodation and facilities absolutely ideal – a real cosy and romantic place to spend a few days before the frenzy of Christmas is truly upon us."
Nicola & Mark, Cheshire
"Just a wee note to say a BIG thank you for letting us use the best cottage in the whole of Scotland! (and maybe the world). Had a truly fabulous time, the cottage is really welcoming & cosy & we loved the open fire & the games. Many thanks."
The Rowell Family, Glasgow
"Had a lovely stay in the cottage. All the small touches make it a home from home. What a fabulous place to chill! Thanks."
Fiona & Yusef, Glasgow
"A wonderful time has been had by all of us. Sleet and snow showers confined us to the cottage on our first day which is exactly what we needed. The cottage is very welcoming, relaxing and comfortable. The sky cleared on our next day to leave snow covered hills together with the last colours of autumn. We took the train from Rannoch to Corrour and walked down Loch Ossian for lunch. We returned for more wine, good food and chat. Thank you."
Jan & Karen – Odense, Denmark & Iain & Ida – East Linton, Scotland
"This is our first visit to Perthshire. We couldn’t have wished for a nicer cottage or better time of year to visit. The autumn colours are so beautiful. We have spent many happy hours walking with our tow English setters in the forest here. The huge safe garden was appreciated for the dogs and we all loved the cosy fire, peace and quiet, and the owls at night. Many thanks for the welcome pack, and thank you for the thoughtful things that made our holiday special."
The Kingsbury Family, Warwickshire
"The cottage was just what we wanted, warm, cosy and very well equipped. It rained every day but it didn’t spoil it at all. We had our first ever walk (the 5 mile) a bit ambitious but still enjoyable. Our eldest daughter and nephew had a great time exploring, playing on the rope swing and collecting wood for the fire. We visited the local distillery, well worth a visit, and spent loads at the House of Bruar. I would love to visit during the summer to enjoy BBQ outside as the garden is fab and so private and pretty. Thank you for a great holiday before returning to work after having our new baby daughter."
The Wells Family - Staffordshire
"Thank you for a lovely week, great location, lovely warm cottage - garden was loved by the dogs."
Linda & Colin Parker - Stevenage
"We have had a wonderful holiday. Very relaxing & chilling, the walks are excellent, done the yellow, blue & red. Went up Schiehallion on Wednesday. Weather perfect, even got a suntan. The dogs have had a great time even climbing to the top of Schiehallion. The cottage is amazing and just so peaceful & quiet. We only had one day of rain. Thank you for a great holiday."
The McKenzie Family – Newcastle
"Thank you very much for the use of your wonderful cottage. It is perfect. We have had a lovely week. We can’t believe the weather though – hottest summer since 1976 and we have had a week of solid rain apart from the first and last day but it did give us the excuse we were looking for to light the fire in the evening and sit by it in your cosy lounge with the wine that you left us. Steve managed to fit in lots of fishing in the evenings and Paul & myself managed to fit in some very good photography. The children loved the rope swing and the trampoline, the Playstation was a godsend when it was raining. We would certainly recommend the cottage to friends and would love to return ourselves."
The Almond Family - Cheltenham
"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in your lovely cottage! Hans thanks again for all the useful tips for our holidays in Scotland!! Maybe until next time…"
Jan, Mirre, Amber & Aron Welboren - Holland
"A Zen-like level of relaxation was achieved by all very quickly!!! The cottage is beautiful, hugely comfortable & beyond welcoming. After many dog walks, 30 fish caught, many board games, bottles of wine & books read, we are returning to ‘normal’ life in a very chilled out frame of mind!! The weather was more sunshine than showers – as good as it gets in August in Scotland! Thank you for the wine and the shortbread, and the small touches in the cottage which made the week a delight! Thanks."
Laurie, Morag, Jon, Angie & Blue – Kinross & London
"Our trip from Portsmouth has been worth it. The cottage has a character all of its own & all the thoughtful little touches have made our stay easy. The surroundings have surpassed our expectations – how could they not, it’s beautiful! Being from a city it’s easy to appreciate the seclusion the cottage offers. We have braved the loch several times & were surprised it wasn’t as cold as expected! We walked the yellow & blue routes and beyond for miles. We visited Pitlochry, then Aberfeldy, venturing to The Birks and standing by the Falls of Moness. The falls of Bruar was worth the trip with the added extra of a visit into the House of Bruar. Tyler, our border collie has urged us on & we have walked endlessly, including Linn of Tummel & all the surrounding forest stops (Queen’s view worth a look). We have travelled miles and enjoyed the scenery & exercise – my camera must be worn out. Tyler obviously thinks all his birthdays have come at once – a garden to play in, no noise of fireworks, though the low flying jets were a bit of a problem. He has swam in the loch countless times & is sure to be sad to leave, as we are. Ryan enjoyed the BBQ, trampoline, swing – not just for kids! An enjoyable week, made more enjoyable by the brilliant weather, lodgings & outstanding surroundings."
Julie & Ryan Farmer & Tyler - Portsmouth
"We spent a wonderful week in your lovely cottage. Splendid walks, breathless silence, surprising landscapes…. That’s what we hoped to find in your beautiful Scotland, and we did!"
Hermien & Fried Keuleers – Belgium
"A beautiful cottage set in one of the most picturesque areas of Scotland.
The cottage is maintained to a very high standard and has everything you could possibly need during your break. If you are looking for a peaceful location without being bored then this is the place for you. Excellent countryside for most outdoor activities with very little traffic and good local facilities."
Ed Lindsay - Edinburgh
"Thoroughly enjoyable, many birds and animals to see and wonder at. Peaceful and restful, all added to a super fortnight. We’ve also enjoyed the flowers in the woods and the roadside, some unknown to us."
Brenda & Peter George – Whitstable
"My second trip to the cottage, this time with my siblings & their partners. Too much to do in a week but we managed to strike a balance between more active and less active members of the group. Would recommend the tea shop at Rannoch Station – we wished we’d had time to go up a stop on the train. The Crannog Centre was a rather surprising treat near Kenmore where we ended up having a marvellous time. Lots of biking and exploring of areas and got my sister Suzie up Schiehallion, which is an amazing feat considering she finds it hard to walk around town. The cottage is the best location for a wide variety of activities and a cosy fire is all you need once you’ve cycled round the loch in the pouring rain!"
Ellie, siblings & partners – Ipswich
"Our visit to your ‘wee’ cottage has exceeded our expectations! It was made even more special after we discovered that the area was home to Clan Robertson, Chris’ family! Thank you so very much, we will be back."
Molly & Chris Roberts – The Bahamas
"We were here with the Roberts, and like them we were simply delighted with your cottage and Rannoch. The long trip from the Bahamas was more than worth it, thanks!"
Susie & Al Lill - The Bahamas
"5 days of real enjoyment and pleasure – what a wonderful place and surrounds – and with friends that we could enjoy it with. Chauffeured all the way with excellent guided tours. Fishing, although enjoyable, brought mixed fortunes! And without a catch – loch probably too cold! The trip on the train to Mallaig went through beautiful countryside – almost unbelievable – a real treat. Prince of India at Pitlochry is an excellent Indian and should not be missed. Wildlife galore – red squirrel, black grouse, red deer, dippers, stoat, hare, golden eagle – hope to come again."
Barrie & Norma – Aberdeenshire
"We had a great time. Weather has been good – no rain. Cottage is homely and we have enjoyed having a real fire. The men had fun keeping the log pile stacked – thanks for the coal. One of our highlights – we took the train from Rannoch Station to Fort William & Mallaig. Left Rannoch Station at 11.04am, (cost approx £50 per couple) travelled through beautiful scenery – arrived Mallaig @ 1.30pm. Time to have lunch & wonder round the harbour and shops. Train departed 4.10pm, arriving back at Rannoch @ 6.40pm – a lovely excursion, highly recommended. Batteries recharged – thanks again."
Moira & Ron, David & Ina – Bridge of Earn
"A very relaxing weekend in your lovely cottage. Beautiful view over the loch – thanks for the nice touches (chocolate eggs for kids, flowers, wine). The trampoline was greatly enjoyed too."
Helene, John, Natalie & Pascal - Edinburgh
"Susan, Hop, Helen, David, Robbie & Susie had a very good time. Things that we enjoyed: the rope swing, the neighbourhood red squirrel, bike trailing around the woods, running up the trails, the bonfire, the loch, the sunshine. Perfect for all of us. Now we are ready for Spring."
Susan Elseley & Family - Edinburgh
"What an amazing way to start the New Year – the cottage is so warm and welcoming, and scenery breathtaking. We enjoyed cooking and eating together; the boys spent many a happy time ‘playing’ with the fire, and the girls loved their wee dolls house upstairs. All in all a beautiful place, filled with hilarity and warmth from the moment we arrived, and will continue all the way home."
Angela & Colin - Glasgow
"What a great time we have had. We spent three days playing cards and going for “wee walks” (which we actually cycled). We have had very nice moments which we are never going to forget. Hope we visit the cottage again before we go back to Mexico. Thank you and good bye."
Lorena & Angela Murra – Mexico
"We have had a relaxing and very much needed break in your lovely cottage. Got up yesterday and walked to Glen Lyon and we are glad to say not a spot of rain fell. In the afternoon we also undertook a it of retail therapy at the House of Bruar. Thank you for leaving the wine and coffee they were much appreciated."
Pat & Jim Lang – Fife
"We had a wonderful three nights. The weather was a bit drizzly but that didn’t stop the walks. What a beautiful area and splendid cottage. Everything was absolutely perfect."
The Gough family - Sunderland
"Arrived to snow covered fields and an icy drive…… our adventure had begun! The warmth of your home awaited us and it as most welcome. We ate our body weight in home baking and hearty meals, and tried to walk it off but only found the yellow route in our second attempt! A beautiful setting which Phoebe our dog loved exploring! What a wonderful way to end the festivities, and a great start to 2006!"
Lorna, Caroline, Fiona & friends
"Couldn’t have wished for ‘better’ weather – round about freezing & light dusting of snow! However, heavy snow as we are preparing to leave – may be back sooner than we thought. The cottage has everything, including your very timely weather warnings. Walks in west Carie (yellow route behind house were good) as was cycle around (or almost around) the loch. Saw red squirrel in garden as well as Jay, Goldcrest, coal tit, etc. didn’t get round to Schiehallion, maybe next time!"
The Tannahill family – Pembrokeshire
"Thank you so much for letting us come up on Thursday it was very good of you. We’ve had a wonderful stay in your lovely cottage. The boys (4 legged) loved the garden & also the walks in the woods. We’re sorry to be leaving but will be back soon we hope. Thank you for the wine & coffee."
Lynne & Brian, Scott & Whisky – West Sussex
"Thank you for letting us use your delightful cottage. Very peaceful and the surrounding areas most beautiful. Many long walks. Can recommend the gold courses, especially at Kenmore. Weather was very kind, very mild and dry."
Anna & John Baker – Carlisle
"What a fantastic location, so many walks, bike rides close to the cottage. The scenery as you already know is awesome but it gets better after exploring. We can recommend the quad biking with Mike from Loch Rannoch Watersports as this is where we saw many wild deer. Thank you Hans & Dawn for the bottle of wine and lovely coffee in this amazing cottage."
Bianca & Lee Russell – Berkshire
"The cottage was lovely (shame about our weather). We saw a variety of wild birds (2 Jays) and a red squirrel. We dined at Post Taste several times – the food was delicious. We visited Pitlochry several times – it is one of our favourite places. We did some souvenir hunting at House of Bruar. We also had some lovely walks in the woods. I see what you mean about low flying jets – they were awesome. Thanks for the coffee and wine – very welcome."
The Hitchins Family – York
"Fantastic time, the cottage is beautiful & very peaceful. The view and the surrounding area is breathtaking. Only wish we’d been here for longer. We fully intend on returning."
James & Clare Mostyn – Kent
"Thank you for the warm welcome, we’ve enjoyed the wine coffee and shortbread. Loved the cottage and garden and beautiful scenery. Such peace and quiet. Unfortunately it’s now time to go back to the busy Midlands."
Diane & David Cox – Staffordshire
"Once again another fabulous holiday in Kinloch Rannoch. Lots of lovely sunshine and walks/bike rides. The kids especially enjoyed the trampoline – it’s been a welcome distraction whist mum & dad enjoyed a glass or two of the lovely wine in the welcome pack! What more is there to say – a most sincere great big ‘thank you’ for a wonderful holiday (again!)"
The McCall Family – Linlithgow
"We’ve had a great week here with various family shuttling down from Inverness. When the kids weren’t bouncing on the trampoline or falling into the loch they managed to find several large toads, four grass snakes, and a few small lizards. This is a wonderfully civilised way to spend some time in the country."
Merran & John Kubalak – Seattle, USA
"What a fantastic holiday home – thank you for allowing us to stay there.
The location is perfect and the cottage itself has all the character you could want as well as all the mod cons. We didn’t want for anything while we were there. The kids loved exploring the wooded area beside the house as well as venturing further afield and conquering a Munro (Schiehallion), but they especially loved the attic which they owned for the week. All in all a fantastic holiday and one which we hope to repeat next year."
McCall Family - Linlithgow
